The Digital Darkroom - Monitor Setup

If you have your computer connected to you monitor using a VGA connection, it is important that the clock and phase of the signal are correctly adjusted on your monitor.  To achieve this, you should download the calibration image available at the bottom of this page, display it full screen (1:1 or actual pixels) and adjust the clock on phase on the monitor's setup menu until there is no interference visible.

You should also check the monitors colour calibration to ensure that colours are correctly displayed as they are meant to be.  This is near impossible without a dedicated monitor calibration tool such as a ColorVision Spyder, but if you are serious about the quality of your pictures and maybe want to start making money from them, then knowing what you see on the screen is the same as what comes out of the printer or mini-lab is of key importance.

Click Here to download the full size version required for proper testing of LCD clock and phase.  If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer it should display full screen just by clicking the link.  Firefox will scale the image to fit the window so you may need to click on the image to zoom it 1:1.  The wide band across the middle should be visibly made up of alternating black and white vertical lines.

This is a site about photography so I'm sure you are expecting to see plenty of pictures.

For now, why not take a peek at the flickr galleries belonging to the two authors of this site.
